Instantly Improve Your Outreach Through Empathy

I’ve been having trouble sleeping lately (sigh) so I’ve taken to doing a meditation before bed. Recently, one of the meditations had me imagine what the world would be like if we all had a sign around our necks that detailed our burdens. You’d see neighbors with “cancer treatment”; “my cat passed away”; or “miscarriage” around their necks. We’d all carry “pandemic” in addition to our other troubles.

Hope

Our team had a chance to talk with nonprofit executive, development, and marketing leaders last week. We discussed lessons learned in 2020—especially thinking about what seemingly temporary changes might in fact become permanent such as remote working and virtual meetings.

Welcome

It is a personal goal of mine that people feel comfortable and welcomed in my home. Don’t be surprised, if you drop by, that you are offered a snack, something to drink, or fresh eggs to carry home. Some of the best compliments I have received are “it always smells like you pulled a cake out of the oven” and “I’m excited to be back at the Nieters bed and breakfast.” I want everyone to feel like extended family and hopefully return soon. Nonprofits can be like extended family too. You are bound by a common idea and hopefully support each other as you grow.
