Home Renovation and Nonprofits: More Alike Than You Might Think

For as long as I can remember, I’ve had a fascination with restoring and renovating properties. The older and more rundown, the better. My current house is the fifth property I have basically taken apart and put back together. Whether tearing down or adding walls, laying tile, refinishing hardwoods, painting, or giving attention to the details, I find the process of realizing an older home’s inherent beauty cathartic.

Summer of 2020

I suspect a lot will be different this summer. Even the weather in the Triangle this week has not been typical. When I entered the nonprofit sector in 1993, summer was considered a downtime—a slower pace. A time to come in a little later, leave a little earlier. Generally, get ahead. Throughout my career I have seen that change. Summer does not have the same frenzy of the fall, but it is no longer the sleepy season, especially not this year.

15 Ways to Involve Your Board and Committee Members During COVID-19

An answer might be: Stewardship, Cultivation, and Awareness.

Planning in the Time of COVID-19

This past week has been unlike any other I have experienced. While it reminds me of natural disasters, terrorist attacks, and other unexpected events that have rocked our world, the COVID-19 pandemic has brought about a different type of uncertainty, anxiety, and feeling of surrealism. Collectively, we are in fear for our health and that of our friends and family, the stability of our jobs and the economy as a whole, and our inability to project when things might go back to normal, or at least some kind of new normal. Rather than come together physically for support and comfort, we’re adapting to an environment of phone calls, video conferences, and virtual hugs and happy hours.
