In 2020 I started painting rocks with mandala designs as an outlet for stress and mindfulness. Everyone in my family got a rock that year for Christmas. Two years later, I am moving on to another artistic outlet that I stumbled upon – peace poles – in an effort to slow down and be mindful. What is a peace pole you ask? The Peace Pole Project was started in Japan by Masahisa Goi, who dedicated his life to spreading the message, “May Peace Prevail on Earth.” Peace Poles symbolize the oneness of humanity and our common wish for a world at peace. The Peace Pole Project is an official project of The World Peace Sanctuary, a nonprofit sanctioned under the United Nations.
I know I am not alone when I say my family rebooted their imaginations when homebound for extended periods of time due to COVID.
This past weekend we gathered our neighbors and roasted s’mores over a bonfire. We met some new neighbors and got to know old neighbors better. Conversations arose naturally about ideas for neighborhood improvements, safety, and future gatherings. New neighbors were asked for their thoughts and ideas. Everyone agreed to get involved in an area of need: Neighborhood Watch program, getting out the vote, landscaping, future events, volunteer opportunities, etc. We all had a fun evening and went home feeling great that we had the opportunity to catch up and now feel motivated to get more involved and take action.
Three weeks ago, I started meeting clients in person that I have only known virtually for the last year. I am filling my gas tank up more than usual and am recalling how to be productive while driving some distance to a meeting. You might be back at your workplace full-time or a mix of in-person and remote. The pandemic rocked your world, and you realize now how important personal time is, how important family time is, and the importance of work/life balance. After reanalyzing your professional life, you may realize that the balance should really be a LIFE/work balance – but how do you make it your new normal? You feel like you are working double time and you are trying to be mindful and continue to do the yoga you took up last year to keep yourself sane.
