I learned a lot from my late journalism professor Chuck Stone. One of his favorite quotes was “What we have here is a failure to communicate.” It actually is a line from the movie Cool Hand Luke, but Stone used it often in class to drill home his point about journalistic integrity and our responsibility to sort through all sides of a story and ultimately communicate it objectively and clearly.
As the newest Armstrong McGuire Senior Advisor I have been thinking about the most important message to carry with me as I step away from 26 years of soliciting donations to now advising nonprofits. My steadfast passion that ranks highest is the message of Stewardship.
I have a confession to make. I don’t like soccer. At all. Never have. I guess it’s not so much that I don’t like it as I’ve just never gotten into it. Never followed it. But in the last few weeks my Facebook and Twitter have blown up with statuses about the World Cup. Suddenly it seems every single one of my friends is a rabid soccer fan. I had no idea!
Over the last week I have made several major gift calls with this newly retired UNC physician whose former patients, residents, medical students and colleagues as well as his fellow churchgoers and many community friends mean that he is well-respected and well-connected in town.
