Strengthening your team requires intentionality. After a transformative leadership expansion that brought a Chief Development Officer and a Chief Operations Officer to the team, CEO Angie Bush wanted to ensure that this newly formed team was well-positioned to lead the organization toward its growth goals. Having built a relationship with Senior Advisor Katie Weeks during the searches that expanded the team, Angie turned to Katie once again to help her leadership team learn to work and lead together.
With the new leaders onboard, Katie led a retreat focused on building trust, promoting open communication, and establishing personal connections.
The day began with personalized DISC assessments for each team member, providing insights into their unique motivations and communication styles. The team discussed their individual strengths, how they prefer to communicate, and the qualities they each bring to the table. This deeper understanding laid the foundation for stronger collaboration and mutual respect.
As a final exercise, each member of the team selected a pictorial descriptor from a series of options that depicted Hospitality House “at its best.” Each chose the image that resonated most with them based on their role within the organization. Interestingly, each team member chose a different picture, illustrating their diverse strengths and perspectives. As they shared the reasons behind their choices, they recognized the importance of honoring their unique contributions and that each leadership role and each leader is essential to the success of Hospitality House.
"I learned more about my new coworkers in one day than I did at eight years of being at my last job. It was great!" --Tom Montaglione, Chief Operations Officer
Six months later, Hospitality House invited Katie back to lead a workshop for other leadership teams in the Healthcare Hospitality Network across the country, a 500 strong collective of houses serving medical patients and their families in their most challenging times. The session, titled Intentional Team Building: Strategies for Deepening Internal Connections, focused on four key objectives to foster engagement and strengthen team bonds:
What started as an opportunity to strengthen their own team, evolved into an opportunity to strengthen their network. What a ripple effect!
Armstrong McGuire is grateful to partner with Hospitality House as they create an environment where each team member’s strengths are valued, and their unique contributions drive the organization forward.
"Armstrong McGuire helped us open dialogue and create relationships between team members. Not only did Armstrong McGuire recruit me to such a great nonprofit, but their post hire support helped us become a strong team."
